Saw the hockey game between Canada and the U.S.A. earlier today. The Canadian team won 3-2 and earned Canada its 14th gold medal. That makes it the most gold medals won on home soil as well as the most gold won overall in the history of the Olympic Winter Games. Wow...
Go Canada

1. I really need to finish my Conworlds article.
2. Anybody good with design and/or military hierarchy? I'm trying to work out the D'Sari military rank insignia, and I want it based on the Smith-Volterra-Cantor set, but I'm running into roadblocks.
3. I need to figure out where I put my insurance card and then go to the doctor. It's been over a week now. |

Do you mean the more holes there are in the stripes, the higher the rank? Or something?
..........................................................................................................
Most armies since Napoleon or even earlier have had either a "triangular" or a "square" system. The "triangular" system is that each unit consists of three units of the next smaller size; the "square" system is that each unit consists of four units of the next smaller size.
In general the "triangular" organizations can defend shorter stretches of border but can defend it in greater depth, are better prepared for catastrophes and disasters and harder for the enemy to break through. The "square" organizations can defend longer borders with fewer troops, but can be broken through if their luck is particularlyl bad.
..........................................................................................................
Armies whose members are particularly ill-trained, ill-educated, unexperienced, or such, have used a system in which each unit consists of two units of the next smaller size, and each officer has just two direct subordinates.
In the Vietnam era some American units had a "pentagonal" system, where the span-of-control was five (each officer had five direct subordinates). This was not for purposes of defending fixed positions nor for massed troop-movements; it was for purposes of moving quickly through areas where a tightly massed large number of troops would run into obstacles.
The Mongol cavalry of Genghis Khan and his successors was famous for having a decimal system, each officer having ten direct subordinates.
The notion is, the less well-trained and well-experienced a given troop is, the more help he's going to need from his direct superior, and hence the fewer direct subordinates that superior can have. But, the more well-trained and seasoned a given troop is, the more independent he can be; the less-detailed his orders from his immediate superior need to be. And, therefore, the more such subordinates that superior can have.
Mongol cavalrymen were probably about 90% independent of their superiors. _________________ The mark of a good citizen is that he doesn't believe anything if he can help it.

The bars not indicative of rank would be black, and gold bars would indicate rank. They would advance from right to left within a tier, and from bottom to top within the metastructure of the insignia (currently there are five tiers to it).
I have several schemes I'm mulling over. One is that a second set of tiers is placed on the opposite side of the chest (the rank insignia is worn on the left side of the chest) would indicate specialist positions, with color- and/or pattern-coded protocols signifying what, exactly, they specialized in; this could also be adapted for extremely high-level officials. Alternatively, a sixth tier could be added and this situation expanded upon for extremely high-level officials.
I appreciate the information on military structure a ton. This is of much use, especially the triangle/square system, which will be of aid describing the border skirmishes that the D'Sari are oft to run into with the Five Prime. Speaking of which, I'm thinking I'd better get back to conworlding. (Either that, or my Calc II homework. I'd much prefer the former, though.)

Does Time Burton qualify as a has-been yet?
I know Sweeney Todd was well received, but it wasn't as strong as its source material and everything else he has done since Big Fish has ranged from miserable (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) to mediocre (The Corpse Bride). It looks like Alice will be no better.
Also, Johnny Depp needs to start reading scripts and stop choosing films based on his personal relationship with the director or the size of the budget. Between the tedious Public Enemies, endless Pirates sequels and every half-assed Tim Burton feature, he has had no time to appear in a film that was equal to his talent as an actor in years. But then he was slumming before Ben Kingsley made it cool, so I should not be surprised. _________________

TV informs me that there is a new line of Dove soap and body wash for men.
This raises a frightening question: Who did they make the Dove products that I have been using most of my life for? _________________

Reptilians.
Is anybody in San Francisco?
I am now in San Francisco for a week or two. If perchance anybody shares this general position, it would be amusing to break the fourth-wall of the internet. _________________ I never disallow civil discussion, and I don't even have the authority to if I wanted to (which I don't want to). Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver come out in 10 days.
The Language Construction Kit comes out sometime within the next 20 days.
Also some interesting books that I will soon have the money for as well as the above.
So many things to look forward to in a couple of weeks! I need to build a time machine, or find something to occupy my time.
Also, !!!!!!!!!!IRON MAN 2 COMES OUT IN MAY!!!!!!!!!! _________________

I can get email notifications from Conworlds.info again For those who are curious, I stopped getting email notifications after Avaronald switched over to x10hosting so I couldn't tell if anyone had replied to my posts or not. This should increase my activity here somewhat. If it doesn't, it's my home computer's fault I'm still trying to get all my stuff off of there so I can have the whole thing wiped and restored to its former operating efficiency. |

I saw Cerne's face -- well, his avatar -- tattoed on a DJ's right shoulder last night at a birthday party. The "birthday boy" is a member of my science-fiction fan club and is also a DJ, so he invited his sfen friends and his DJ friends both. We had Mongolian barbecue. I didn't see anyone there who looked Mongolian. _________________ The mark of a good citizen is that he doesn't believe anything if he can help it.

I have ordered my copy of the LCK; it should arrive between April 12th and April 30th
Damn international delivery. It's pretty easy to fit a couple boxes of packages on a plane, they don't take up that much space and it can't be that big a hassle; why should I have to pay 40 bucks more then??? Its insane!
On another note I've finally started seriously considering what I'll be doing at uni. Linguistics, Political Science, Spanish, Cultural Anthropology, Religious Studies, Classical Studies, Te Reo Maori and Latin are all available, and I need at least six, but I'm only sure about 3 of my choices.
And, something a little more interesting perhaps, I've finally started writing a story set in one of my conworlds! Don't know how long it'll be till I'm finished, but its started at least. _________________

Me too. I'm probably going to post it in the Creative Writing section when I get finished.
I'm back home! WHOOOOOOOO! Maybe I can get some conworlding done this week (spring break). |

I've got work from midnight to 5am tomorrow. If it wasn't for that I'd be having an awesome start to the weekend. As it is I have to go home while my mates get wasted. _________________

I knew it was St. Patrick's Day, but had midterms, so I couldn't drink in the morning. Then I got home too late to drink, because I have midterms today.
This is the first time since I started drinking that I've failed to drink on St. Patrick's Day. Damnit. _________________ Veghinix Wiki

Not so much college, as my fiancee and I staying at a friend's house for dinner until 11 pm with an hour and a half drive home. 12:30 am isn't too late for me to start drinking, but it is if I have to be up at 6:00 am. _________________ Veghinix Wiki

My good computer (the one with fast internet, sound and gaming capability) has been down for about a week. The reason? It's monitor broke. We had another monitor but that is REALLY old and refuses to work either, and the last one is being used by the one I am currently using, which is my mum's, and she won't let me swap this monitor to the good computer, cos its got all her uni work on it.
A new monitor would be about 200$. I'd probly end up paying about half of it. Fuck. _________________

Think of computers more as cost over time, and you won't get so depressed about the big hits of new purchases.
On average, the cost of having and using a computer includes certain large maintenance and replacement costs, but it evens out. _________________ I never disallow civil discussion, and I don't even have the authority to if I wanted to (which I don't want to). I think the question here is whether to save my money for a brand new lap top with something like 4gb ram and 320gb hard drive that'll last for a few years and will be MINE, or invest in the computer that I'll only get to use for another nine or ten months anyway, seeing as I'm going flatting next year. _________________

*Or* you could just get an old, yet functional, CRT screen off freecycle (for free).
That would be my suggestion. If you ever need anything old to stretch your computer's functionality, check there. Or even Craigslist, to buy something used.
Then you can have your computer, and save up too. _________________ I never disallow civil discussion, and I don't even have the authority to if I wanted to (which I don't want to). I know my computer is filled with viruses, worms, malware, trojans, and other nasty stuff. That's why I'm mostly not using it anymore. That's also why I am trying to get everything of mine off of it right now before we haul it in for maintenance. And almost everything is off of it. All that is left are some photos I want to save.
Good thing is that if we ever do get the whole system wiped and restored, I won't need to pay for the anti-virus that will need to be installed on it afterward, since the computer isn't mine to begin with |

Yes: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=freecycle
(Couldn't resist)
You can easily get a free monitor off freecycle almost anywhere in the world, particularly CRT; many people are getting rid of them these days. _________________ I never disallow civil discussion, and I don't even have the authority to if I wanted to (which I don't want to). Too many projects, too little time with friends. And I'm still looking for a job... _________________

Sano started a forum for showing off your conscripts. This is the "human" requirement I attached to the e-mail (with one exception; I had the incorrect gender for hic, haec, hoc in the message. Somebody hit me.).
ENG: I am a human, and I would like to use this forum.
FRE: Je suis un homme, et je voudrais utiliser ce forum.
LAT: Homo sum, et forum hoc uti malo.
KLI: Human jIH 'ej naDev jIQum vIneH!
SUD: Humanos ket, bu ghennderom um semmaṫan.
TFZ: Ré módò: hùmön zhǒv, dō ré ox zhuqï:tû fa zhǒv shimû:vhô ī:vī: zhǒv.
BAN: Gü fumana di, rorro sapisa boli di siboli navarrona rumo benigavvomo.
SOS: In rim humanen, sem maîndego vanamogo melis arkelis.
ENG = English
FRE = French
LAT = Latin
KLI = Klingon (tlhIngan Hol)
SUD = Suddakkosimh
TFZ = Tênë i Fôdmkê:vhī Nhē i Zhǒv
BAN = Banagarinimo
SOS = Sols Oswahe
The last four are languages of my own devision, and are in varying stages of completion. The Klingon is more appropriately translated "I am a human, and I want to communicate hereabouts." I couldn't find the words for "use the forum"; this was the closest equivalent I could manage. |

So now I've read all of Kurt Vonnegut's novels. What am I going to do with the rest of my life? _________________

Conworlding and letting us know what you're doing with it, of course! |

Sano's forum is quite nifty. I've posted a few examples (from Suddakkosimh and Banagarinimo).
Also, why does hitting "post reply" just take me back to the main index? |
